Friendly Tips for Having Tough Talks with Your Kids

By Krysta Riddle, our ChanceTn Lead Peer Ambassador

As a single parent of three lively girls, I totally get that having tough conversations can sometimes feel overwhelming. But don't worry! I've picked up some helpful tips through a training class that I think can make these chats a little easier and more comfortable for both you and your little ones.

1. Set the Mood for a Calm Chat

Find a cozy, quiet space where you won't be interrupted. This way, you can both focus on the conversation without any distractions getting in the way!

2. Keep It Simple and Honest

Be clear about what you want to discuss and try to keep things on track. Use language appropriate for their age so they can easily understand what's being said.

3. Listen and Be Supportive

Pay attention to your body language—it can say a lot! Show your kids that you're really listening and that you're there to help them through any tough feelings. When your child/children know you care, they'll be more likely to open up.

4. Encourage Their Voice

Try saying something like, "What I think I hear you saying is…" to show you're engaged and to invite them to share more of their thoughts and feelings.
